Northern Enclosure

Directions

Take the Hicks Road turn off (opposite Maungatautari School) from Maungatautari Road. Parking is at the end of Hicks Road – you will then need to make the approximately 20 minute steep walk up through private property to the forest edge – if you need to stop for a breather enroute to the enclosure you can enjoy the magnificent views over Lake Karapiro.

Follow the signage to reach the northern enclosure and note that you do not access the northern enclosure via the over-the-mountain track.

What to see and do

The 35 ha northern enclosure is a very special place. The first post of the 47km perimeter fence was planted where the northern enclosure gate is. The first kiwi to walk on the mountain in 100 years was released into the northern enclosure. The northern enclosure was the first area to be pest proof fenced – to celebrate 3,000 school children joined hands with local iwi and invited guests around the perimeter of the enclosure to give it a group hug.

The Te Ara Tirohia Loop Track (meaning the viewing platform) is 1.1km long – all the labour required to build the two bridges along the track was donated by volunteers.

Today there are a number of kiwi in the enclosure – you won’t see them during the day but it is important to keep to the track so that you don’t disturb them.

This enclosure is pest free – please keep it that way, DO NOT take any pets with you and check your bags before entering.

No dogs

Please note that dogs are no longer permitted anywhere on Maungatautari unless they are muzzled certified predator/species or guide dogs.
