What to see and do in the southern enclosure

The southern enclosure showcases the restoration project with high quality metalled walking tracks, a regenerating forest, an aviary to ‘house’ transit wildlife and a forest canopy viewing tower.

Kaka feeding – next to the aviary on the Rata Track
Between 10.30am – 11.00am weekdays
Between 10.00am and 3.30 pm weekends.

Note: The kaka are not captive birds and find plenty of food in this pest free forest – therefore while the birds have been coming to the supplementary feeding times the Trust cannot guarantee that they will be there the day you visit.

Aviary – Rata Track
The aviary is currently home to a breeding pair of kaka, Wild-one and Mia, who are on loan from Auckland Zoo. In mid December they hatched four chicks – the first kaka chicks on Maungatautari in 50 years.

On 20 June 2009 four juvenile kaka arrived from Wellington Zoo –once they have ‘keyed-into’ their surroundings they will be released.

Viewing tower – Rata Track
This 16 metre structure was designed to allow visitors to get up close to the forest canopy – watch out for kereru and kaka flying amongst the tree tops.

Walks
There are 5km of walking tracks within the southern enclosure – each one has been constructed to help visitors experience the variety of flora and fauna thriving in the forest. Each season brings the opportunity to see the changes in the forest.

Note: This is a pest free area – please keep it that way and keep your pets at home. It is vital to check your bags for mice before entering the enclosure.

Maungatautari after dark - guided walks

Let us guide you through the forest at night. You can look forward to a ‘wild’ experience – you’ll see what is happening in the forest on the night which means that no two visits will ever be the same. That might mean getting up close to one of the weta species, catching a glimpse of the kokopu (native fish) in the streams, watching the gnats on the fungi or even hearing a kiwi call. Whatever is happening on the night your guide will make sure everyone has a good time.
